Cork Irish Republican Socialist Party has called for a national
mobilisation against An Bord Pleanala's decision to build an
incinerator at or near Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork despite continuous
objections throughout the county.
A spokesperson for the Cork Cumann informed the Starry Plough in a statement earlier today "what is required immediately is a national mobilisation with the involvement of trade unions, environmentalists and community action groups in an effort to get our message across to the politicians who have failed, and who have sold out the environmental health concerns of the people, and to make it clear to them that in no uncertain terms is a toxic incinerator going to be built. "Similar national demonstrations to that which occurred in Derry several years ago attracted tens of thousands, interest groups and individuals from all parts of Ireland and further afield. The message at that time was a warning shot to those in power who intended to plough ahead with a completely unacceptable decision which was totally against the wishes of the people in the whole of the North West region. "Likewise, the people of Cork and the entire southern region are completely opposed to the destruction of Ringaskiddy by a poisonous toxic burner. We believe that there are many different alternatives to the issue of land filled sites and incinerators. Low cost environmentally safe alternatives that have yet to be properly examined by the local authorities involved which could easily be put into practice in this or any other area of this country. "It is the health and well-being of the people that we must demand to be given number one priority here, not the continued push for a quick profit by big business. Our party believes that people power is required now to extinguish any move towards the construction of an incinerator!" STATEMENTS ENDS |
