"Surrender Weapons During All Party Talks" Says Mitchell Report
19 January 1996

The Irish Republican Socialist Party predict that the Mitchell Commission will link the surrender of weapons under the control of non-Governmental organisations to full inclusion in all-party talks, Party spokesperson Gino Gallagher said.

"Sources close to those engaged in the process confirmed to us a number of recommendations due for release at a press conference by the international body next Wednesday. Included in these is the core recommendation that the process of the surrender of weapons in the hands of non-Governmental organisations should begin to coincide with the start of all party talks."

"The same source also confirmed that the draft report was already in the hands of the British and Irish Governments. Consideration was given to the release of the report to all the political parties involved in making submissions on the Tuesday evening before the official release, but this was ruled out over concern about leaks to the press."

"The IRSP view this development with great apprehension, even if it was predictable. Sinn Fein must not allow themselves to be led into the unprecedented and unthinkable road of capitulation to imperialist preconditions. The Republican Socialist Movement have already made our position clear on this matter, and we shall stand by it."

"We all desire peace, however, this peace must come through honest and open negotiation. Not through surrender by one side or the other. This 'peace process' must stand or fall on the premise that all enter into negotiations on an equal footing. If, as now looks increasingly the case, the British and their Unionist allies demand that Republicans bend the knee before entering into full and unconditional negotiations, then it's better that this 'process' be ended now."
