INLA Statement on proposed marches
19 June 1997

The following is the text of a statement issued to the Socialist Republican Publicity Bureau:

"The Irish National Liberation Army view as sinister and provocative the declared intention of loyalist orders to hold triumphalist marches through a number of nationalist communities. The aim of these proposed marches is to coat-trail through nationalist areas already traumatised and to cause the maximum amount of disruption and hurt.

We as a peoples army have in the past fully supported the local residents groups in their attempt to enter into dialogue and mediation with the loyal orders.

These genuine attempts have been spurned by people who have patently no interest in respecting civil rights or religious liberties. From the inception of this statelet the Orange Order has been rewarded by the British Government for refusing to enter into dialogue - Drumcree in 1995-96 underscored this.

The Irish National Liberation Army will not sit back whilst nationalists are battered off their own streets by British forces at the behest of the Unionist/Orange establishment .

Directions have been issued to all of our units and I.N.L.A. Volunteers will be placed on full stand-by in defence of Nationalist communities where and when necessary."
