10 September 2001

The Republican Socialist Publicity Bureau received a message from the leadership of the Irish National Liberation Army regarding the death of Gulay Kavak.

The Turkish hunger strike claimed a 33rd victim this past Friday, the 7th of September, when Gulay Kavak died in after 68 days on death fast.

The INLA statement read:

"The INLA reiterate their call for immediate international action against the Turkish regime responsible for the deaths of over 60 political prisoners and their supporters.

"The INLA know well the experience of loss of comrades on hunger strike and are deeply moved by the heroism and bravery of these Turkish comrades."

"The situation in Turkey's prisons is extremely serious and we call on all people of conscious to reject Turkey's entry into the European Union until such time as the regime in Turkey ceases its appalling attack on the human rights of political prisoners. We also call for a boycott of all Turkish business interests, especially those in the tourist industry, in an effort to make plain to the Turkish state that the political prisoners do not stand alone in their selfless and courageous protest."

"The executive of the INLA take this opportunity to express their pride in the courage of the republican socialist POWs in undertaking their action in solidarity with the political prisoners in Turkey last month. They followed in the proud tradition of Volunteers Patsy O Hara, Kevin Lynch, and Michael Devine."
