Comrades of the Cascadia Forest Defenders, a chairde:
We in the Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America, on behalf of the Irish Republican Socialist Party whom we represent in Canada and the United States, want to extend our solidarity to you and applaud you having won an injunction against further logging until at least the 2nd of September. While this is at present only a delay and not a cessation, we recognize that confronting the forces of industry with the present Administration--brazen and squalid as they are in their grovelling and pandering to the interests of the capitalist rich with total disregard for the needs, interests, and wants of working people in this country and abroad--one savours every small victory. To do so, helps provide the strength necessary to see these long battles through until our final victory. We are proud to have one of our comrades, in fact, the Youth Coordinator of the IRSCNA, fighting alongside of you in recent days. Timmy ("Granola" to yourselves)--with his fellow traveller, Val--has been on a cross-country trek for the past several months and has been providing the kind of solidarity that the IRSP most favors. We like to experience gestures of solidarity as direct, mutual, and material aid to those, who like ourselves, are engaged in struggle against the capitalist system and the multi-national corporations who have usurped whatever dreams of participatory democracy we may have harbored in the past. There is nothing that so much communicates solidarity between to groups in struggle than the sharing of resources, time, labour, contacts, strategies, and the like. And, as I said, Timmy has been a model of this favoured form of solidarity for the IRSP, working with yourselves, Food Not Bombs, and a host of other worthy organisations challenging capitalism. We in the Irish Republican Socialist Movement recognize that it is essential that clean air and water, bio-diversity, old growth forests, endangered species, wild rivers, and at least some retained stretches of nature in her undisturbed and pristine state must be defended and protected for human life to continue on this planet. We recognize as well, that the system of capitalism, driven solely by the pursuit of profit threatens to put our species and all others at risk. For that reason, we salute you for your courage and determination in carrying forward a campaign of eco-defense. For our part, we struggle to bring to and end the continued existence of imperialism and capitalism and to replace it with a system suited to the interests of the working people of this planet--a system that will replace the pursuit of profit with the objective of meeting human needs, interests, and desires. Chief among such needs, of course, is an environment that is healthy, and economy which can be sustained without the destruction of the environment, and a quality of life that also ensures the sustained and valued lives of all species. Both you and we face many battles before us, so we should savour the small victories we achieve when the opportunity is found. Enjoy yours now and strength to you in the battles ahead.
